Durty Nelly's on Food Network's 'The Opener' September 7th
In 2009, host David Adjey and the crew of Food Network Canada's new documentary series, The Opener, followed restaurant rookie Kyle Drake and his partner Joe McGuiness as they worked to open Durty Nelly's Irish Pub in downtown Halifax. The cameras followed former Saint Mary's football player Drake as he learned the ropes of opening and running a successful pub.
“First-timers often don’t see past the glamour of owning a restaurant,” says David Adjey, host of The Opener. “They’re in for a real shock if they’re not ready to put in 90-hour weeks, early morning set-up, and meticulous cash flow management. They might as well put their money on the floor and set it on fire.”
Chosen for its big budget and unlikely partnership with 46-year-old Irishman and hospitality veteran, Joe McGuinness, Durty Nelly’s development and opening was a promising plot for Food Network new series.
Since opening in 2009, Durty Nelly's has become a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, with authentic charm (every piece of the pub from the floorboards to the bar signs was brought over from Ireland and rebuilt piece by piece), comforting fare like fishcakes and lamb stew and live entertainment.
We know how the story ends - with many a pint pulled - now it's time to see how it began. Watch the beginnings of Durty Nelly's on Tuesday September 7 at 9pm ET/10pm AT.
