Later this month Port Royal, NS will re-enact the baptism of Grand Chief Membertou, a Saqumaw (Chief) of the Mi’kmaq tribe in the early 1600’s. This open-air mass on June 24th will mark the 400th anniversary of his family being baptized, thus making them among the first Aboriginals in North America to “adopt” Christianity.
Then it’s off to Halifax for a time of celebration and sharing!
If you come to the Halifax Common between June 25th and 28th, you will experience one of Canada’s largest PowWows (Mawio’mi). Hear the rhythm of the drums, see the beauty of the dance, learn about Mi’kmaq healing methods and visit a traditional Mi’kmaq village where you will interact with canoe-makers, basket weavers, quill makers and other artisans as they demonstrate their craftsmanship.
A free family event, featuring a concert by Canadian icon Buffy Sainte Marie, Membertou 400 will entertain, educate and enlighten people of all ages about First Nation customs, traditions and beliefs.
