We Nova Scotians are passionate about our seafood chowder - from traditional creamy to spicy to tomato based, this dish is both versatile and delicious in its many forms. Angela Malec, Director of Marketing & Promotions at Murphy's Restaurant, recently had the pleasure of attending Murphy's own seafood chowder competition. Read on for Angela's summary of the event. Warning: this blog will make you hungry!

Halifax, Nova Scotia Seafood Chowder

On Monday June 4th, a province wide search for the Best Seafood Chowder in Nova Scotia concluded at Murphy’s Restaurant when a winner was crowned the “Master of Seafood Chowder” thanks to a delicious recipe.

Nine contestants battled it out in front of a panel of celebrity judges, including Gordon Stewart from the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia, Emily Haynes of Taste of Nova Scotia, Colin Maclean of Waterfront Development Corporation, Lynn Ledwidge of Destination Halifax and Caroline Parker of 96.5 Kool fm. Each seafood chowder was judged on presentation, use of local ingredients, overall cost of ingredients and the criteria of most importance: taste.

Murphy’s is pleased to congratulate the winner of the 2012 Best Seafood Chowder in Nova Scotia Competition - raise your spoons to Green Lane Farm Seafood Chowder.

Clearly the best fish chowder in NS is at "Barb's Restaurant" in Westville next to the Salvation Army on Main Street. It is served only on Mondays and Tuesdays though so only try it on those days!

I just ate the most amazing creamy seafood chowder from Dhaba Express, a fairly new Indian fine dining restaurant in Bayers Lake. They call it Seafood Shorba and is made of clams, lobster, salmon, and shrimp. The cream base has a distinct flavour (light spices).

Nova Scotia has some really amazing chowders! We've been doing the Chowder Trail, a passport created by Adventures in Taste that features 35 Nova Scotia Chowders. We are on #20 so far and to date Port Pub has been our favourite http://thelocaltravelerns.com/?p=1745
