Good Friday at Durty Nelly's
Posted by: Kristen Pickett
Durty Nelly's has the yummiest fish n' chips in Hali; huge pieces of haddock in a light Killkenny beer-batter, thick potato wedges called 'fat chips' and tangy coleslaw. To improve upon an old standard, DN's does their own version of tartar sauce with a smooth, smokey flavour. This goodies paired with an ice cold pint were just the thing to make mine a "good Friday."

Deli Green Bakery
Posted by: Kristen Pickett
Ah, the baked good. They really are a weakness of mine. I love picking up a muffin, croissant, turnover, ect. at any bakery, but in a pinch, I rely on the spectacular baked goods from Deli Green. Deli Green sells their wares in a variety of coffee shops in the city, but they also deliver fresh goods every day to Atlantic News on the corner of Queen & Morris. And since AN is my go-to convenience store, so are Deli Green's my go-to baked goods. I wrote a very enthusiastic post about their Morning Glory muffins last year. Today's yummy choice, however was the apple cinnamon roll....

Durty Nelly's on Food Network's 'The Opener' September 7th
Posted by: Emily Kimber
In 2009, host David Adjey and the crew of Food Network Canada's new documentary series, The Opener, followed restaurant rookie Kyle Drake and his partner Joe McGuiness as they worked to open Durty Nelly's Irish Pub in downtown Halifax. The cameras followed former Saint Mary's football player Drake as he learned the ropes of opening and running a successful pub.“First-timers often don’t see past the glamour of owning a restaurant,” says David Adjey, host of The Opener. “They’re in for a real shock if they’re not ready to put in 90-hour weeks, early morning set-up, and meticulous cash flow management....

Comforting Cod at Chives Canadian Bistro
Posted by: Kristen Pickett
A couple of weeks ago, I met a friend in the cheese section at Pete's. We spent a while chatting and checking out the fare: a delightful cheese with Mexican spices and another with a hint of beer! When I mentioned that we should meet up for dinner soon, she provided me the ultimate answer: "Let's do dinner now!" It's sometimes frustrating that I plan to make plans with people, but often get sidetracked. This was the perfect opportunity to prevent such an occurrence, so I said "YES!" As we mulled over spots to eat, my friend mentioned her desire to go to Chives. Chives had...

FID Resto, Nova Scotia
Posted by: Kristen Pickett
A few months ago, in the midst of the Savour food & Wine Festival, I had the opportunity to dine with our wonderful guests, three food writers who were visiting for the Savour food & Wine Show. As you probably can imagine, as a food writer myself, I was thrilled to make the connection with these women, dine with them and pick their brains about fantastic gastronomic experiences all over the world. Come to think of it - this was the best dining experience of my life. The way some dinner conversation might range from politics, war, economics, pop culture and natural...

Another great meal at the Brooklyn Warehouse
Posted by: Kristen Pickett
For my good friend's birthday, we celebrated at the Brooklyn Warehouse- a spot that seems to be synonimous with birthdays in my life! To be honest, it seems like the best place to celebrate a bday; it's a relaxed, comfortable spot, the servers are not only knowledgeable, but fun to boot- and then there's the food....After settling down to a glass of L'Acadie Vineyard's Brut, we placed our orders. Though I normally go after one of BW's tantalizing appys and incredible mains, I decided to change it up a little. After hearing about the soup of the day and did a...

Light Dinner at the Wooden Monkey
Posted by: Kristen Pickett
A couple weeks ago, I went to The Wooden Monkey for my friend's birthday. I'm a big fan of small plates because it allows me to try more stuff. So as my friends were going for entrees, I opted for the Japanese Dumplings. Once I heard the soup of the day, I was sold on that as well! Soup is my comfort food, and when it's a hearty, earthy-flavoured soup, I just can't pass it up! The soup was a blend of tomato, fennel and Parmesan cheese, pureed just to a medium thickness that ate almost like a chili. Warm, rich...

A Happy Hour Feast at Morris East
Posted by: Kristen Pickett
A friend of mine was in town a little while ago and we managed to consume quite a bit of food! We went to Trader's Bar for their $5 unlimited mussel deal, Ryan Duffy's for an incredible steak dinner, and ended the weekend at Morris East. Morris East is what I would consider a traditional 'neighbourhood' resto. It's small and lively, has amazing food and is often packed - a great sign! My friend and I stopped in at 5 to take advantage of the 5-6 Happy Hour when wine is just $4. Though ME is famous for their wood-fire grilled pizzas, we were both in the mood...

Fishcakes & Chow
Posted by: Kristen Pickett
I always LOVE finding new spots to do breakfast on a weekday. I often work with the Delta Halifax staff in my position as an event planner, but I have never made it to the Crown Bistrot. That all changed last week when I met my contact for breakfast. I'm so used to reserving a good, hearty breakfast for brunch on the wknds, that I was slightly shocked to be able to experience it on a weekday! We met at 9 am and quickly placed our orders. Now, I'm a sucker for a good fried egg. I've actually settled into a weekday morning...
